A novel circularly polarized (CP) antenna with wide axial-ratio (AR) beamwidth is presented by placing two pairs of parallel dipoles in a square contour. After the principle of wide-beamwidth CP radiation is described under the realization of similarity in polar and azimuthal radiation patterns for a pair of parallel dipoles, a class of planar CP antennas with straight and folded dipoles is designed and fabricated on a single dielectric substrate. In practice, the four dipoles in these CP antennas are excited by a 1-to-4 probe-to-microstrip feeding network. Experimental results show good agreement with simulated ones in terms of radiation pattern/gain, axial ratio and returned loss. In particular, the 3-dB AR beamwidth at the central frequency of 1.6 GHz has been extended to 1260 and 1350, respectively, as confirmed in experiment.
